Should You Get a Credit Card?

Some people say avoid credit cards at all costs. Others say you need one to survive. The truth? A credit card is just a tool – and today, we’ll help you figure out if it’s the right one for you.

We Make Money Make Sense

THE BIG QUESTION

Credit cards are not good or bad. They’re a tool. The real question is: are you in the right season of life – with the right mindset and habits – to use that tool effectively?

Here are a few questions to ask:

  • Do you consistently spend less than you earn?
  • Do you have a working budget?
  • Can you track your expenses and pay in full each month?
  • Are you building or rebuilding credit right now?

If you’re nodding yes – a credit card might help you. If not, it might hurt more than help (for now).

WHO SHOULDN’T GET ONE (YET)

You might want to hold off if:

  • You tend to carry balances.
  • You use credit when your checking account runs low.
  • You’re emotionally overwhelmed by money right now.

That’s not judgment – that’s self-awareness. Waiting until you’re ready is a smart financial move.

Instead:

  • Use debit only.
  • Build emergency savings.
  • Work on mindset and tracking habits first.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER A CARD

You might benefit from a card if:

  • You’re trying to build or rebuild credit.
  • You can commit to paying in full.
  • You’re strategic and have a repayment plan ready.

And you don’t need to start big. Try:

  • Secured credit cards (great for building)
  • Student cards (low limits, low risk)
  • Retail cards (limited use, easier approval)

We’ll talk more next week about which card is right for your situation.

MAPS MOMENT – Mindset + Automate

The best time to get a credit card? When you have a plan, not just a need.

Mindset means knowing why you want it and how you’ll use it.
Automation helps you set up guardrails – autopay, alerts, low-limit spending caps.

You’re not doing this to impress anyone. You’re doing this to create a system that supports your goals.

So Now What?

Next week, we’ll walk through different types of credit cards – cashback, travel, secured, and more – and how to choose the one that fits your life beest.

Until then, keep it simple, stay intentional… and follow your MAPS.
