The Credit Card Game Plan

Your credit score isn’t a mystery. It’s math. But if you’ve got mistakes on your report, bad data is driving your future – and that’s a problem you can fix yourself.

We Make Money Make Sense

WHY THIS MATTERS

Credit affects more than your ability to borrow money. It impacts:

  • Your car insurance rate
  • Your apartment application
  • Even your job opportunities in some industries

And yet… most people have never even pulled their credit report. We hadn’t. Not until we were already knee-deep in a debt payoff plan and wondering why our interest rates were still sky high.

That’s when we learned: your credit score is only as accurate as the info being reported. And mistakes are common.

OUR EXPERIENCE WITH REPORT ERRORS

We found errors on our reports like:

  • Old addresses we hadn’t lived at in years
  • Accounts that weren’t ours
  • Late payments that were actually on time

Each of those mistakes was quietly hurting our credit – until we learned how to dispute them.

No lawyer. No expensive credit repair service. Just our own research, persistence, and a little bit of time.

HOW TO DO IT YOURSELF

Here’s how you can start:

  1. Get Your Free Reports
    • Go to AnnualCreditReport.com – it’s the only site authorized by federal law.
    • You can get all three reports: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.
  2. Check for Errors
    • Look at every account.
    • Are the balances right?
    • Are the statuses accurate (open/closed, late/on time)?
    • Do you recognize everything on the report?
  3. Dispute What’s Wrong
    • Each bureau has an online dispute system.
    • Submit proof when you have it (like a statement or payment confirmation).
    • They’re required to investigate within 30 days.

It doesn’t cost anything but a little time – and it could raise your score without paying a dime toward your debt.

MAPS MOMENT – Shelter

You wouldn’t build a house on a broken foundation. So don’t build your financial future on a broken credit report.

Shelter means protecting your progress – and fixing errors on your report is a simple, powerful way to do that.

We’re not anti-credit. We’re pro-you. And we believe you deserve a score that reflects your reality – not someone else’s mistake.

So Now What?

Next week, we’re looking at how three major financial gurus talk about credit – and where we agree, disagree, and add our own take with the MAPS lens.

If you’ve ever fixed something on your credit report – or if you’re going to try this for the first time – let us know in the comments. You’re not just repairing your score – you’re reclaiming your story.

And if you want help fixing bigger credit issues, make sure you’re subscribed – we’re working on something powerful just for you.

Until then, keep it simple, stay intentional… and follow your MAPS.
